Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), observed annually from April 11 to 17, is an initiative founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. This campaign raises awareness about the Black maternal health crisis and promotes solutions to improve outcomes for Black mothers. While much of the focus is on healthcare providers and policymakers, fathers and father figures can also make a significant impact in supporting maternal health.Â

Understanding the DisparitiesÂ
Despite advancements in healthcare, Black women in the U.S. face significantly higher maternal health risks. In 2023, the national maternal mortality rate for Black women was 50.3 deaths per 100,000 live births—more than 3x the rate for White women (CDC). Factors such as socioeconomic barriers, discrimination, and lack of access to quality healthcare contribute to this crisis. As a result, addressing these healthcare disparities in Black women is essential.Â
The Role of Fathers in Maternal HealthÂ
FatherUp is committed to empowering fathers and helping them take an active role in their children’s lives. When it comes to maternal health, fathers and father figures play a crucial role in providing support, advocacy, and emotional stability for mothers during pregnancy and postpartum. A father’s involvement in early parenting can significantly impact both maternal and child well-being.Â
1. Being an Advocate in Healthcare SettingsÂ
Black women’s concerns about their health are often dismissed by medical professionals. Fathers can help by:Â
Accompanying their partners to prenatal appointments and asking important questions.Â
Advocating for their partner’s health and ensuring that medical concerns are taken seriously.Â
Learning about maternal health risks and solutions to better support their partner’s needs.Â
2. Providing Emotional and Physical SupportÂ
Pregnancy and postpartum recovery can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Fathers and father figures can support mothers by:Â
Helping with household tasks to reduce stress and workload.Â
Encouraging rest and self-care for their partner.Â
Being present and engaged, providing emotional reassurance during and after pregnancy.Â
3. Engaging in Parental ResponsibilitiesÂ
The transition to parenthood is demanding, and active father involvement can make a significant difference. Fathers can:Â
Take on diaper changes, feedings, and soothing the baby.Â
Learn about breastfeeding and postpartum care to support their partner’s recovery.Â
Promote a nurturing environment that fosters maternal well-being. Â
Recent Initiatives and Support for Black Maternal HealthÂ
There are several initiatives focused on improving Black maternal health, and fathers can be part of the solution:Â
The Motherhood Group, which provides maternity support for Black womenÂ
birthFUND Initiative, launched by Elaine Welteroth, which offers grants for midwifery careÂ

How Fathers Can Get InvolvedÂ
Fathers can take an active role in supporting Black maternal health by:Â
Attending fatherhood programs and parenting classes to learn more about supporting maternal health. Examples at Action for Children below:Â
Advocating for maternal healthcare rights by staying informed and involved in community discussions.Â
Sharing experiences and building a support network with other fathers navigating parenthood.Â
By standing alongside mothers during pregnancy and beyond, fathers can play a powerful role in addressing Black maternal health disparities. This Black Maternal Health Week, let’s commit to strengthening families, advocating for better healthcare, and ensuring every Black mother receives the care and support she deserves.Â
